Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems — Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and the Information Systems Program Criteria.

 

Program Educational Objectives 

(Reviewed, Updated and Approved on October 19th, 2026 by the CIS Faculty in consultation with the CIS Advisory Board)

One component of the accreditation criteria requires each program pursuing accreditation to formulate Program Educational Objectives in consultation with their program-defined constituents. ABET defines Program Educational Objectives as “broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation.”

  1. UH CIS graduates will meet or exceed the expectations of their employers in the computer information systems workplace, or in other related professional careers.
  2. UH CIS graduates will be successful in advanced studies in Computer Information Systems or in other related professional careers.
  3. UH CIS graduates will engage in professional self-development activities that will allow them to adapt to evolving technical challenges and career opportunities.

 

Student Outcomes

(Student Outcomes were reviewed and approved by the CIS Faculty in September 2024)

Another component of ABET accreditation requires that programs specify Student Outcomes, which “describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through the program.”

  • Student Outcome 1: Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  • Student Outcome 2: Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
  • Student Outcome 3: Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  • Student Outcome 4: Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  • Student Outcome 5: Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
  • Student Outcome 6: Support the delivery, use, and management of information systems within an information systems environment. [IS]
